Certifications are earned from a professional society or from an IT vendor (e.g., Microsoft, Cisco, etc.). In general, must be renewed periodically, or may be valid for a specific period of time (e.g., the lifetime of the product upon which the individual is certified). As a part of a complete renewal of an individual’s certification, it is common for the individual to show evidence of continued learning — often termed continuing education — or earning continuing education units (CEU).

Most certification programs are created, sponsored, or affiliated with professional associations, trade organizations, or IT vendors interested in raising standards. Even those programs completely independent from membership organizations enjoy association support and endorsement.

The growth of certification programs is also a reaction to the changing employment market. Certifications are portable, since they do not depend on one company’s definition of a certain job. Certification stands about the resume and the professional reference by being an impartial, third-party endorsement of an individual’s professional knowledge and experience. It is important to note that certifications are usually earned from a professional society or educational institute, not the government. If a demonstration of ability or knowledge is required by lawbefore being allowed to perform a task or job, this is referred to as licensure. In the United States, professional licenses are usually issued by state agencies. The certification assessment process, for some organizations, is very similar or even the same as licensure and may differ only in terms of legal status, while in other organizations, can be quite different and more comprehensive than that of licensure. certification and licensure differ only in terms of legal status.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Standard 1100, defines the requirements of meeting the ANSI standard for being a certifying organization. According to ANSI Standard 1100, a professional certifying organization must meet two requirements:

  1. Deliver an assessment based on industry knowledge, independent from training courses or course providers.
  2. Grant a time-limited credential to anyone who meets the assessment standards.

Certifications are very common in aviation, construction, technology, environment, and other industrial sectors, as well as health care, business, Real estate broker and finance. In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration regulates aviator certifications.

The Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE) is a U.S.-based organization that sets rigorous standards for accreditation of certification programs based on the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing (APA, AERA, NCME). Many members of the Association of Test Publishers (ATP) are also certification organizations.

Certificaciones

Las certificaciones se obtienen de sociedades profesionales o de vendedores de tecnología (Por ejemplo: Microsoft, Cisco, etc.). En general, deben ser renovadas periódicamente, o son válidas por un periodo de tiempo determinado (Ejemplo: El tiempo de vida del producto en el que el individuo está certificado). Como parte de un sistema completo de renovación de una certificación individual, es frecuente que el individuo muestre evidencia de aprender continuamente – Lo que se llama frecuentemente Educación Continua – o que gane unidades de educación continua (CEU).

La mayoría de los programas de certificación son creados, patrocinados o están vinculados a asociaciones profesionales, organizaciones de comercio o vendedores de tecnología que están interesados en elevar los estándares. Aunque estos programas son completamente independientes de la membresía a estas organizaciones, gozan del respaldo y soporte de las mismas.

El crecimiento de los programas de certificaciones es una reacción al mercado cambiante de empleo. Las certificaciones son portables, ya que no dependen de una definición por parte de una compañía sobre un trabajo en específico. Las certificaciones se colocan en la hoja de vida y sirven de referencia profesional al ser imparciales, y respaldadas por un tercero respecto al conocimiento y experiencia profesional que posee un individuo. Las certificaciones proveen un respaldo imparcial de un tercero sobre el conocimiento y experiencia de un profesional.

Es importante señalar que las certificaciones se obtienen usualmente de sociedades profesionales o institutos de educación y no del gobierno. Si la demostración de habilidad o conocimiento es requerida por ley antes de poder ejercer una tarea o trabajo, esto hace referencia a una Licencia. En los Estados Unidos, las licencias profesionales usualmente son expedidas por agencias estatales. El proceso de evaluación de la certificación en el caso de algunas organizaciones es muy similar o incluso la misma como la de una licenciatura y solamente difiere en su aspecto del estatus legal, mientras en otras organizaciones, puede ser muy diferente y más abarcador que el de una licenciatura. Las certificaciones y las licencias difieren solamente en términos de su estatus legal.

El Instituto Nacional Estadounidense de Estándares (ANSI) en su estándar 1,100, define los requerimientos que debe cumplir el estándar ANSI para ser una organización certificadora. De acuerdo al estándar ANSI 1,100, una organización de certificación profesional debe cumplir dos requerimientos:

  1. Entregar una prueba basada en el conocimiento de la industria, independiente de cursos de entrenamiento y proveedores de cursos.
  2. Otorgar una credencial limitada en el tiempo a cualquiera que cumpla con los estándares de la prueba o evaluación.

Las certificaciones son muy comunes en la aviación, la construcción, tecnología, ambiente, y otros sectores industriales. También en los servicios de salud, los negocios, bienes raíces y finanzas. En los Estados Unidos, la Administración Federal de Aviación regula las certificaciones de los pilotos.
